A garage can mean different things to different people. Not everyone uses it only as a storage unit or place to keep the car safe from the elements. Maybe you’re looking for new ways to expand your living area without having to pick up and move to a larger home. If you need more space inside the house, consider moving one of the following areas out to the garage!

Home Office

Clean, paint, and furnish your garage to convert it into a home office! You may need to add an air conditioner or fans to keep the air moving during the summer or a heater to keep it warm in the winter. Also consider insulating your garage to make it more airtight, energy efficient, and comfortable.

Art Studio

If you’re an artist, you may feel like you can’t get too creative inside your lovely home for fear of spilling paint on the carpet or getting charcoal on the furniture. Clean your garage and furnish it with an easel or large table so you have lots of room to work. You could add some shelves and cabinets to store projects and supplies. Make sure you have plenty of light as well; consider adding windows or lamps, keeping the garage door open while you’re at work, installing a garage door with large windows, or painting the walls white to brighten the space!

Home Gym

If dragging yourself all the way to the gym every day feels like a hassle, you have little ones you can’t leave at home alone, or you don’t have a space in your home to work out (but you’d love to), transform your garage into a gym! Set up your equipment, or clear space to lay down mats so you can exercise comfortably. If you work out to videos, you could install a television in the garage as well. Add a stereo system, large mirrors, weights, a cabinet to store water bottles, towels, athletic shoes, or whatever else you need to create a space where you can get the job done.

Mudroom

If your mudroom is taking up too much space or your entryway is stuffed with shoes, coats, hats, and dog leashes, consider converting a portion of your garage into a mudroom. You could add a bench, some shelving or storage containers, bags, and some hooks to hang your items. Decorate the area the way you want it. You could add a splash of paint and a large rug to warm it up a little.

Before you turn your garage into a highly used space, make sure your garage door is operating properly so you and anyone else who uses it will stay safe. If your door is inactive and you’ve been putting off having it repaired or replaced, you could be missing out on the convenience it provides. It may even be preventing you from making the conversion you’ve been planning or using your garage to its full potential!
